Websites on Substance Use

Drink and Drug News
Web Page
The FDAP's publication is an excellent port of call for drug workers and those with a professional
interest in the drug field. The site is good for news and government publications.

Addictions.co.uk
Web Page
A website that carries news items relating to addictions. The information presented is not
hugely developed or detailed.

Tackling prison drugs markets: Home office study
Web Page
A useful study from 2005 on drugs in UK prisons, covering the availability and sale of drugs in
prisons and the effectiveness of the surveyed drug treatment programmes.

Erowid Website
Web Page
Probably the largest resource on mind-altering substances on the net. It is a huge resource.
Perhaps most uniquely it contains hundreds of user testimonies on any given drug and most
combinations of drugs. Note however that even though bad experiences are recorded at Erowid
most posters are middle class, well educated, teenage experimenters and recreational users.
There
are accounts of addiction but rarely do we hear testimonies from people with
deep-seated issues or mental health problems.

Still, it is a fascinating resource and can be useful.

Drug and alcohol findings
Web Page
This website should be regular port of call. News, research, discourse. It has the simple aim of
translating latest research into effective interventions - can't thing of anything more useful than
that!

Sussed professionals
Web Page
Hailing from the same town as the AER this website is sponsored by the Brighton DAAT. It is a
clear, friendly and helpful website. Though much of the info presented mirrors other sites it is
particularly interesting for its PDF resources. Available here are things like drinks diaries and
hand outs on sleeping well and eating well for substance or alcohol users.

Independent Drug Monitoring Unit
Web Page
An interesting website which monitors the prices of drugs in the UK through user surveys. Full
of interesting info like the price of heroin having much more than halved since 1994. It is
primarily a user advice website and features such unusual resources as lists of recommended
solicitors.
Here we link directly to their annual price index for illicit drugs.

Centre on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions
Web Page
An excellent resource coming from this research facility. Go straight to it's downloads section to
find a good resource of articles on alcohol and substance use. Particularly excellent is an
available resource of interview questionnaires for use with clients - this is highly recommended
with most of the
questionnaires having been designed by William R. Miller of Motivational
Interviewing fame (who has a close association with this centre)
