Mind Website
Web Page
Britain's leading mental health charity and advocacy group. The interest here is their expansive information database. Presented as an A to Z it covers virtually every aspect of mental health from experiences to pharmacology to advocacy within the mental health system. There is a useful guide on what to expect when you go into a psychiatric hospital that is clearly written and should ease some anxiety and provide some sense of empowerment (it is also a useful read for workers wanting to imagine what it must be like to be referred). I applaud the frankness of many of the guides - they cover much needed yet oft-forgotten areas of worker and patient experience.

National Institute for Mental Health in England
Web Page
A website suited to mental health professionals and commissioners, it is nevertheless worthy of inclusion here for its updates on policy changes in the UK. It's list of ten high impact changes that need to be made to improve services is fairly interesting reading, as is the new initiative on the detection of the early signs or symptoms of psychosis (or as they neatly call it, ARMS 'At-Risk Mental State'). This includes a guide for youth workers on what to look out for in adolescents (though this is only a single page PDF).

NHS Mental Health Specialist Library
Web Page
The NHS offer specialist libraries on all health topic, this one on Mental Health is broad in scope though meant for mental health practitioners. It is worth having a hunt around for diagnostic criteria for different conditions but it won't really tell you how, or help you, to do your job (unless you are a nurse).

Bob the psychiatric nurse
Web Page
Bob is a man after my own heart. His website is a listing on a range of subjects to do with mental health. It is quite thorough and as an alternative to the bigger websites offers links to advocacy and anti-psychiatry websites. His site is a little old and so some links are no longer valid.

Mental health is a subject well catered for on the internet. This listing covers a few of the more
useful general sites and then looks to find articles and websites that cover mental health in such
arenas as the street, prisons, daycentres etc.

Great ideas in personality
Web Page
Not strictly a mental health website but a good website full of theories of personality. It can make interesting browsing.

The Sainsbury Centre
Web Page
An advocacy and lobbying charity which aims to improve mental health services in the UK. It is well known for its publications on Assertive Outreach.

Psychnet
Web Page
Not a bad resource for professionals, though it's articles section contains some random selections - 'Racism: Are Germans Different?' being one of them.

Mental Health Foundation
Web Page
An excellent website with a range of mental health resources including a huge list of linking websites, very useful publications and a good page for looking up news items relating to mental health. It is fairly easy to navigate.

Psychminded
Web Page
A website specifically for mental health workers, with some quite strong anti-establishment, anti-medication leanings. Its book section can be quite odd, listing books like 'Men are from Mars...' in its psychology section, but also having some useful listings for things like nursing. The website also has a professionals forum which may prove useful to many.
