Websites about alcohol interventions

Journal of alcohol and alcoholism website
Web Page
As with most journals, much of the content (particularly the newer research) is for subscription
only. However you can freely access the content in their list of their
top fifty most oft-sighted
articles . These are available as PDFs. Most articles are medicalised and not for the layman but
there are things worth looking at. There is an interesting article on the differences between
substance/alcohol addicts with affective disorders and those without - and another on
alcoholics and preferences for
sweet tastes (perhaps workers need to arm themselves with
wine gums - after years of working with street drinkers I'll try anything!)

Alcohol Concern
Web Page
A big sprawling website on the dangers of alcohol consumption and initiatives for intervention.
The knowledge base section includes a range of texts, though it doesn't seem particularly up to
date: with their medical interventions section having only two papers, both from 2003, one on
pharmacological interventions and one on complimentary therapies. There is not much here for
workers looking for practical tools, it is a website better suited to keeping workers boned up on
new strategic initiatives and commissioning wrangles (in the UK at least).

Alcohol Policy UK
Web Page
A professionals blog on all aspects of alcohol policy in the UK. A useful resource for those
looking at patterns of policy, implementation and commissioning in other parts of the UK. There
is also an open invitation to email with queries should you have any.

Institue of alcohol studies
Web Page
An excellent website featuring a publication 'Alcohol Alert' with regular articles on a range of
subjects of concern to professionals that is available as a PDF. It is rare to find something this
useful for free.

Drink and Drug News
Web Page
The FDAP's publication is an excellent port of call for drug workers and those with a professional
interest in the drug field. The site is good for news and government publications.

Drug and alcohol findings
Web Page
This website should be regular port of call. News, research, discourse. It has the simple aim of
translating latest research into effective interventions - can't thing of anything more useful than
that!
