This book makes it onto the 'must have' list.

It is a comprehensive and informed book that will tell you everything that you need to know
about each subgroup of drugs. Different to most books, it covers not only technical aspects of
drugs but quality of sensations produced, cost on the street, histories, potential for polydrug
use, sociological impact etc.

If you are approaching this book from the 'drugs do nothing but harm' camp then this will be
uncomfortable though enlightening reading.  The holistic approach should help workers reframe
their concept of addiction in terms of the client's potential rewards from drug use.

If buying 2nd hand be sure to get as up to date a version as possible.

A clearly written beginner's guide to drugs that is ultimately quite comprehensive.

It is not excitingly written and there is nothing compulsive about it (Andrew Tyler's book is better
for this), but it is clear and covers the psychological and neural aspects of drug use. At times it is
rather humdrum but good for a quick reference.
